The first beam is set to be started in the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) between 2:00am CST and 3:00am CST in Geneva, Switzerland on September 10th!
In the most basic of terms, the purpose of the LHC is to simulate conditions immediately following the "Big Bang" to see what type of particles were present.
For anyone who has even a casual interest in physics this has been an event anxiously awaited for far to long.

In the most basic of terms, the purpose of the LHC is to simulate conditions immediately following the "Big Bang" to see what type of particles were present. For anyone who has even a casual interest in physics this has been an event anxiously awaited for far to long. Back in March, this article appeared in the New York Times: Asking a Judge to Save the World, and Maybe a Whole Lot MoreBy DENNIS OVERBYE, NY Times, March 29, 2008 More fighting in Iraq. Somalia in chaos. People in this country can’t afford their mortgages and in some places now they can’t even afford rice.
None of this nor the rest of the grimness on the front page today will matter a bit, though, if two men pursuing a lawsuit in federal court in Hawaii turn out to be right. They think a giant particle accelerator that will begin smashing protons together outside Geneva this summer might produce a black hole or something else that will spell the end of the Earth — and maybe the universe…www.nytimes.com/2008/03/29/science/29collider.htmlThere's a possibility that Michael Crichton's new book coming in Dec. may involve this subject. There are only rumors now, but there should be an official press release very soon.

Well so far so good. We're not dead yet. I imagine death by black hole would be a very quick way to go.

Suit to Halt Big Collider in Europe Is DismissedBy DENNIS OVERBYE, NY Times, September 29, 2008 A federal judge in Honolulu has dismissed a lawsuit trying to stop the running of a giant particle accelerator outside Geneva, dodging the issue of whether it could actually cause the end of the world. The judge, Helen Gillmor, said in her ruling Friday that the court lacked jurisdiction over the Large Hadron Collider, which is located on the Swiss-French border and was built by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, with help from the United States and dozens of other countries...www.nytimes.com/2008/09/30/science/30collide.html
