Michael Crichton died Tuesday November 4, 2008 after a long battle with cancer. I just found out and I am stunned. I can’t even react now, except to say it was much too soon. My heart and prayers are with his family and friends now. Crichton’s website has a memorial page: www.michaelcrichton.net/aboutmichaelcrichton-inmemoriam.htmlHere are some news stories on this tragedy: Michael Crichton DiesBy Dave Itzkoff, NY Times, November 5, 2008, 12:59 pm artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/05/michael-crichton-dies/?ref=books An Appraisal - Michael CrichtonA Tireless CraftsmanBy CHARLES McGRATH, NY Times, November 5, 2008 www.nytimes.com/2008/11/06/books/06appr.html Jurassic Park Author Michael Crichton Dies at 66By HILLEL ITALIE, Washington Post, AP, Wednesday, November 5, 2008; 6:03 PM www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/05/AR2008110502963.html In appreciation of Michael CrichtonBy Marjorie Kehe, CS Monitor, November 5, 2008 features.csmonitor.com/books/2008/11/05/in-appreciation-of-michael-crichton/

Hi Kahlessa...long time. I am shocked....I I feel much the way you do Kahlessa. I feel so unprepared for it. Thank you Michael for all that you have given to us. Jiet, It's good to hear from you. But I wish it wasn't under such sad circumstances. From the memorial page: In Memoriam
Michael Crichton
1942 - 2008
Best-selling author Michael Crichton died unexpectedly in Los Angeles Tuesday, November 4, 2008 after a courageous and private battle against cancer. While the world knew him as a great story teller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us -- and entertained us all while doing so -- his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes. He did this with a wry sense of humor that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget.
Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand.
He will be profoundly missed by those whose lives he touched, but he leaves behind the greatest gifts of a thirst for knowledge, the desire to understand, and the wisdom to use our minds to better our world.
Michael's family respectfully asks for privacy during this difficult time.
A private funeral service is expected, but no further details will be released to the public.

I am shocked and stunned too, and was also utterly unprepared for this news. Now that our enthusiasm for his work and life was gaining momentum, it is all cut short by this terrible loss.
I must say a couldn't keep back tears, and I will try to turn my webpage into a deserved memorial site devoted to this great author, but most of all, great person.
For me he has been the voice of who speaks out for the human dimension in the world of science and technology, a voice that is much needed, because it is unfortunately not so common.
Of course, my prayers are with him and those close to him that will most feel the loss. We, his fans, readers and moviegoers, will make sure he'll stay alive in our memories and in those of future generations.
May he rest in peace.

From Publisher's Weekly: A new, untitled novel from Crichton had been scheduled for a December 2008 release but was postponed early this fall. No word on whether the novel was completed.
Jonathan Burnham, president of HarperCollins, said everyone at the publisher is "profoundly saddened by the news" and that Crichton was not only a "unique talent" but also "collaborative, brilliant, full of ideas, and great company.” www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6611833.html

On Michael Crichton's official website, the Administrator posted this: A personal (and unofficial) open letter to all of you "regulars" and "non-regulars" of the Official Michael Crichton Message Board: First, I would personally like to thank all of you who have sent us and Michael's family extraordinarily kind, personal messages of condolence over the last couple of days. The depth of your feelings for Michael is matched by those of us here who have know Michael personally for a long time and have had the privilege of working beside him over these many years, and has been a great comfort to all of us. I know many of you couldn't get through on the website due to an incredible overload to our system, but for those of you who were able to get through, thank you so very much. And for those of you who couldn't, I look forward to corresponding with you over the next days and weeks, once things have calmed a bit.
We have set up two new links. One is titled "Condolences," and the other "Remembering Michael Crichton." The first link is for you to post your personal note of condolence that we will send along directly to his family. The second is for you to share your thoughts and feelings about Michael with each other.
We ask that, as is always the golden rule here, that you be respectful to Michael, his family and your fellow posters.
The website and boards will remain up-and-running so you can all continue to discuss the issues that Michael brought to life in his books, films and television projects. crichton-official.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=290

Thanks you Kahlessa! I tried to get into the board like 20 times already, but couldn't. Only just was able to. This is indeed one of the saddest days in my life...

Kickup emailed me this and gave me permission to post it:
I just cannot believe this! None of us had any idea he was sick like this! I am numb. Maybe he will be of even greater service to humanity as he works with the angels. I feel a real personal loss; as though his pc, hands and thought processes have vanished from his books on my shelf. Of course I am sad for his loved ones and friends, but I'm even sadder for the loss of brilliance and service to the planet just when we need him most during this time of global insanity. No one can ever fill his particular niche of thoughtful contribution to humanity.

Here's a comment I posted on the New York Times website: Michael Crichton was far more than a novelist. He was a brilliant philosopher who explored ideas and issues through fiction. On a wide range of important topics, he ignited analysis and debate among readers around the world as few writers have ever done. Crichton’s strength was not in the answers he provided, but in the questions he provoked. His death is a tragic loss, but his books will continue to entertain and educate readers. artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/05/michael-crichton-dies/#comment

Oh My God!!!!!!!! I can't believe it! Did anyone know he was sick? Last thing I knew we were waiting for a new book from him! This doesn't feel real. I don't think that anyone (other than those that had to know) knew Michael Crichton was ill. That's the way he apparently wanted it and so I'm glad that's the way it was.
