Michael Crichton fans will eventually have two new books to read. According to a New York Times article, Posthumous Crichton Novels on the Way, an adventure novel titled Pirate Latitudes which in set in Jamaica in the 17th century, will be published on Nov. 24. Harper Collins will also publish a technological thriller of which Crichton had finished a third. The publisher and estate will find an author to finish the novel based on Michael Crichton's notes and plan to publish the novel in the fall of 2010. Check my blog Musings on Michael Crichton for more info.

Wikipedia says the publication of the completed techno-thriller has been pushed back to fall 2012, "according to the HarperCollins catalog." I have searched high and low on the HarperCollins website and cannot find any mention of this. But it obviously isn't coming out this fall or we'd be seeing some publicity by now.

Considering that Crichton's estate and publisher had to find another writer to finish the novel, there probably won't be an announcement until the book is finished. It's not unusual for one or two writers to not work out, so I don't expect to hear anything until the novel is complete and ready to go. As a bookseller I can tell you that many scheduled publication dates mean absolutely nothing. (Especially coming from Wikipedia.) Until the release date is less than six months away, I don't put any stock in a projected release date. Things change and books are postponed very frequently.
