Very interesting, Kahlessa! And I should definitely bookmark that - it seems a very useful site. And check this questions. I think it is very likely that this questions is inspired by MC's NEXT, though it hasn't been mentioned here. www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mspermdonor.htm

Speaking of Next, here’s an interesting article from the BBC website: Hybrid embryo ban 'unnecessary' BBC website, Thursday, 5 April 2007 news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6524883.stm“Government plans to ban the creation of human-animal hybrid embryos could potentially harm UK science, say MPs.” Didn’t Michael Crichton say something in his author’s comments about being opposed to bans on research? (If anyone wants to post this on the Crichton message board, feel free. Just let people know where you found it. As the administrator said, they’ve inadvertently wiped out my account so I can’t post on the Crichton board until they fix it. The administrator said that would be when they finish transferring to the new software and he doesn’t know when that will be.)

He said that stop banning research, 'cos if it is banned in US, it will continue in somewhere else in the world. And I agree, it is a big world we live in...

I always liked "the straight dope", as in accurate information. This website is a treat.

Mother Theresa was a high point--especially when she put Mr. & Mrs. Bubba in their place. I guess you can't expect much, considering the idiots in Stockholm that award the things. After all, they're nothing but a political statement. Nash is such a good example of that. The movie had nothing to do with his life and was nothing like the book. His contributions were insignificant. He was a passivist during WWII--even after the great idea of giving Poland to Hitler didn't work out so well, especially for the Pols. He went around Europe trying to find some country that would make a big deal over his denouncing his US citizenship and welcome him into theirs. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his "orientation" and his political views. It had absolutely nothing to do with any contribution to business or mathematics.

It's odd how this previous post sort of went into Limbo. I wanted to go back and edit it. I didn't want it to seem so harsh about Nash's "orientation." Nash's "orientation" is *his* business and he can do whatever he wants. It's certainly not *my* business. His activities on campus related to his "orientation" did, however, impact other people in negative ways [at least in *their* opinions], on which I won't elaborate, making it *other* people's business. I do think it *highly* inappropriate for the Nobel Prize committee to make awards intentionally bringing in certain very narrowly focused special interest groups, having absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the subject matter of this or any other award they've ever given out, just to be there in order to help "enhance" this particular celebration.

Dudley,
Are you able to edit the post you wrote as a guest? You said you wanted to but it doesn't seem you have. I can delete the post and you can write it again. It is a little harsh. I would distinguish between the the Nobel Prizes for sciences, which is what the Straight Dope link is concerned with, and the Nobel Prizes for peace, literature, and economics, which the Straight Dope column admits are subjective. It seems you commented on what you saw before clicking on the link.

It seems that you can't edit a post made as a guest, only the admin can. This won't be an issue anymore because I modified the board so guests can lurk, but not post.
I modified Dudley's post after private messaging him and asking his permission. I don't want to take on the role of censor for the message board. I will try to come up with some guidelines soon, especially as we gain new members. Just think before you post; that's always a good policy.
