Couple of weeks ago I found a very interesting article in a local weekly newspaer in Sri Lanka. It is about this years Nobel price which is being awarded to the IPCC and Mr. Al Gore.
First, I encourage you to read the article. It was a Sinhala newspaper, so here I have roughly translated it into English for you. Forgive me if the translation is not very good.
Nobel Peace Price for Environmentalists!
This year's Nobel price will be awarded to International Panal on Climate Change (IPCC) and the past vice-president of US Mr. Al Gore.
Scientists of IPCC conducted researches for a long time to get an understanding about how the climate changes will effect the world. Nobel price is given to encourage them to carry on their reaserches.
In 1988 IPCC was established by the involvement of two organizations of UN. Namely, WMO and Environmental Program of United Nations (I translated this directly from what was on the paper, so I'm not sure if this is exactly the organization). The main objective of IPCC is to see how the human activities affect the climate changes.
The vice-president of this organization is a Sri Lankan, who is professor Mohan Munasinghe. He is also the main advisor on Energy and Power in Sri Lanka and the chancellor of the International Institution of Water Study of Oslo. (There is more about him which is not relevent here...)
The co-winnder of the prize, Mr. Al Gore was nominated for it due to his contributions on standing up to Global Warming and the effect of fuel burning. He also made a film based on this which is awarded an Academy Award. Recently a British judge said that this movie is biased and it is scientifically incorrect, but still this movie also helped him in winning the Nobel Award. There, he has completely ignored the findings of IPCC.
Al Gore says that the sea levels will rise about 20 feet within this century, while the IPCC's opinion is it will be about 1/2 to 2 feet. The maximum they expect is one feet. Sea levels have risen about that much during the last 150 years. Thought Gore worrys about what will happen when iceburgs melts in Greenland, it is unfortunate that he's not paying attention to the scientifically proven facts.
Researches has reveled that in 1941, temperature in Greenland was higher than it is today. If the sea levels rise as Al Gore says, by now half the world should have been drawned by now.
He also worrys about the fate of Polar Bears in Greenland. His opinion is that they will be extinct by drawning due to the sea level rise. But the only incident recorded so far is that four bears have died due to a storm.
This politician and the producer predict how many people will die due to the fact that Global Warming. But he has forgotten that scientific researches have revelaed that more people are dying from coldness. In short, what Gore has done is not a service to the world, but making people worried, according to the opinion of neutrals.
The main problem today is not Global Warming. Hunger, War and uncurable deceases like AIDS are more urgent problems in world today.
According to the last will of Alfred Nobel, the Nobel Peace Price should be given to people/organizations who try to make peace and friendship between nations and races. People who try to oppose war. People who try to make the world a peaceful place.
It is true that the concept of peace is very wide. But now people doubt that if the Nobel prize has been given according to the expectations of Alfred Nobel. There are lot of people and NGO's who oppose war, nuclear warfare, etc. But it is a surprise that Nobel Price Committee has overlooked them.
There is no record that Al Gore tried to do anything for the world peace during the period 1993-2001 where he was the vice-president of US. But during their time they increased the number of soldiers of US forces and also the facilities. They also sent friendly forces to Russia...

First I must say I'm really surprised to see this kind of an article. For the best of my knowledge, it is the first of it's kind I've seen in a Sri Lankan newspaper. All the articles I've seen so far (about Global Warming, of course) are the ones that support it. Never seen an article that at least has expressed doubts about Global Warming. (and I read a lot of newspapers)
Yes, this article is not very informative, it doesn't state where the writer got her facts. But seeing this, I cannot help but notice MC's voice behind the whole article! It is what he's trying to see behing this whole article.
Note this para:
"Al Gore says that the sea levels will rise about 20 feet within this century, while the IPCC's opinion is it will be about 1/2 to 2 feet. The maximum they expect is one feet. Sea levels have risen about that much during the last 150 years. ANd this:
"This politician and the producer predict how many people will die due to the fact that Global Warming. But he has forgotten that scientific researches have revelaed that more people are dying from coldness. In short, what Gore has done is not a service to the world, but making people worried, according to the opinion of neutrals."
Is he trying to create a "State of Fear"?
And finally:
"The main problem today is not Global Warming. Hunger, War and uncurable deceases like AIDS are more urgent problems in world today."
Isn't it what MC's whole point?
I'm really happy that this viewpoint is also coming into the attention of the public. Because, people are 'convinced' about Global Warming. For example, a few months ago my 14 year old cousin sister and her younger brother (11) told me about a concert held in US to aid the protest against Global Warming. I don't quite remember what it was, but it was given a huge publicity all over the world, so you may know what it is. ANyway, the thing is, when I tried to tell them the facts against GW, they took me to a fool!!!
What are your thoughts about this? Are slowly but surely facts starting to take over lies?
