Happy American Independence Day everyone! This is a day where I say a big “Thank You” to our founding fathers for their courage, endurance and the hardship they endured in creating our nation. I would also like to say “Merci Beaucoup” to France because if it were not for France, there would not have been a United States of America. They financed the greater part of our revolution, and eventually sent troops and ships to aid us. An excellent book to read on the subject is A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America by Stacy Schiff. (freedom fries, my foot!)
Here’s an interesting story about the revolution. Baron Von Stueben from Prussia came over to help train the Continental soldiers (which they badly needed). Von Stueben did not speak very much English, so he had a translator. At one point he told his translator, “Swear at them in English for me, because they will not do what I tell them!”

I've heard German's a good language for swearing.
