Today I tried to login to MC's message board and found the following message:
The Official Message Board of Michael Crichton is closed for refurbishing. In a few days we will be launching a brand new message board. Thanks for your patience and check back next week for ALL NEW features and exciting conversation.
Sounds interesting. I'm curious as to what will be the changes...

Until then, please feel free to crash over here.

Oh, that's always a great thought... MC posting a message there. Maybe addressed to us by our screen names? At least for those of us who are regulars. Oh, never mind.... That's too good a thought to be true....

Addressed to us by our screen names would be too much to hope for. But many celebrities post their own messages to everyone on their message boards from time to time. Paul McCartney has a section on his board for his messages to his fans. But Crichton does have a reputation for being shy, so perhaps posting on his board is just not his style. He did participate in a month-long Barnes & Noble online discussion of State of Fear in November 2005. He greeted a number of the people participating and responded to many questions. I haven't been in too many of the author-led discussions, but I have heard that Crichton posted much more than many of them do. Perhaps being shy is a character trait of many writers. I downloaded everything he said in the Barnes & Noble discussion. I'll try to post some excerpts of his remarks on this board. Keep your fingers crossed that he'll do an online discussion for Next.

An online discussion for NEXT would be a nice idea. I really want to listen to his own comments on NEXT and also on his 'new' writing style.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the new look message board.

Does the Michael Crichton message board go down for upgrades often? And how do they define “a few days”? Oh well, Kahlessa’s got some great stuff here.

Thanks, The One! I just popped over there. I can't believe I have to start from scratch after having 948 posts. Well, now I'm never going to make it to a thousand, since I have my own message board to look after.
I'll put some things on the Crichton board, but keep checking back here for special treats exclusive to Kahlessa's Corner.

Hi guys,
I just went over there and revamped my profile and chose an avatar. Why are all the avatars masculine looking? I chose Timeline but it's a pic of a muscular guy getting time-zipped or ripped in half. Kahlessa, you chose the one I wanted. All of us girls will end up with the same one! LOL! ...Unless I choose another. Maybe Admin will let us import our own.
Anyway, the world feels normal again, right? Thanks for nailing down the fort, Kahlessa!

I can choose another avatar. There was another one I was considering. It’s just that Travels is my favorite Crichton book. I liked the cactus’ attitude. I think you can import your own, probably subject to approval. The new board’s going to take some adjusting to. It’s like going away to college and coming back home to find they’ve redecorated the whole house. It doesn’t feel like home anymore. Just think of Kahlessa’s Corner as the after hours tavern where you can kick back after the main event.

I really like the changes they've made to the website! For Next there are sections titled History, Policy, What's Real, Speeches, Essays, and Video. There are also history section for Airframe, The Lost World, and The Andromeda Strain. I wonder if they'll be adding that for the rest of the books. I hope so!
There was another nice surprise on The Lost World section. I knew Arthur Conan Doyle also wrote a book titled The Lost World, but I didn't know that Michael Crichton had written an introduction for it. Over in the Lost World info page is this:
"Subsequently Michael wrote an introduction to a re-issue of Conan Doyle's original novel. He used the opportunity to explore how Conan Doyle had made the concept of dinosaurs persuasive, and how he had overcome various difficulties in the narrative. "
And the complete introduction is there for us to read! Very cool!

Here’s a change in the website I found curious. In the new “About Michael Crichton” section is a page “Autographed books” on how to get a signed book from Crichton.
Previously in the “About Michael Crichton” section was a page titled “Contact” and in addition to the autographed book information, there was this:
“Michael likes to hear from you but he gets so many messages he can't personally respond to each one. Instead, you might like to join the conversation in the Official Michael Crichton Message Board.
Unfortunately Michael cannot accept story ideas due to legal restrictions. Sorry about that.”
Doesn’t he like to hear from us anymore? Or did he just get too much mail and decide it wasn’t good to encourage it? It’s also interesting that the part about story ideas is gone as well. But I’m sure Crichton has people screening his mail, and people who think it’s a good idea to send their ideas to a professional writer probably weren’t paying attention anyway.

I would love to write to Michael and hey would't it be a dream come true if he replied back to me?! ;D
Anways, I am rather curious about the message board, Kahlessa. What is IMPORTED TOPIC - and why isn't there a board for people to introduce themselves and even an off topic section? It would be nice and the forum will stat lively....

What is IMPORTED TOPIC - and why isn't there a board for people to introduce themselves and even an off topic section? It would be nice and the forum will stat lively.... You can write to Michael Crichton at the address for autographed books: Michael Crichton 2118 Wilshire Boulevard, #433 Santa Monica, CA 90403 I wrote to Crichton and I got a very brief letter in reply and an autographed photo. I wrote him a couple of more times but I didn’t get a response. Maybe it’s only one to customer. Give it a try. What do you have to lose? As for the message board, a few months ago they changed the software for the message board and website. The threads from before couldn’t be transferred into the new system so they deleted many of them and the ones they wanted to keep were each put in one long post as “imported topic”. The Admin has been very strict about staying on topic. You can introduce yourself during a post but the Crichton board is supposed to be devoted solely to Michael Crichton’s works. I started this message board so we would have some place to discuss State of Fear since we can’t do it on the Crichton board. But Kahlessa’s Corner is also a place where we can discuss other things not related to Michael Crichton.
