There’s a program on Book TV this weekend: Break Through: From the Death of Environmentalism to the Politics of Possibility Authors: Ted Nordhaus; Michael Shellenberger Upcoming Schedule Sunday, January 13, at 12:00 AM EST Sunday, January 13, at 9:00 AM EST About the Program Ted Nordhaus and Michael Shellenberger expand on their 2004 essay "The Death of Environmentalism" in their book "Break Through." The authors argue for a new politics that embraces investments and innovations in clean energy to deal with environmental issues.I’ve been reading the book and it’s fascinating. While the authors tend to be more alarmist than I am about global warming, they are very critical of most current environmentalist thought, especially Al Gore’s chicken little fear-based approach. They explore the connection between prosperity and environmentalism, noting that the environmentalist movement was made possible by the affluence brought by industrialization, rather than provoked by problems caused by industrialization. The authors also have some good things to say about Michael Crichton, and include their own analysis of how environmentalism is functioning as religion for some people. What I like about the book is that it provides a good framework for dealing with environmental problems, which we’ll always have even without global warming. This is an important book.

Studies Deem Biofuels a Greenhouse ThreatBy ELISABETH ROSENTHAL, New York Times, February 8, 2008 Almost all biofuels used today cause more greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuels if the full emissions costs of producing these “green” fuels are taken into account, two studies being published Thursday have concluded. The benefits of biofuels have come under increasing attack in recent months, as scientists took a closer look at the global environmental cost of their production. These latest studies, published in the prestigious journal Science, are likely to add to the controversy.... www.nytimes.com/2008/02/08/science/earth/08wbiofuels.htmlI've heard biofuels referred to as payola for farmers.

Climate Skeptics Seize on Cold SpellBy Andrew C. Revkin, NY Times, March 2, 2008 The world has seen some extraordinary winter conditions in both hemispheres over the past year: snow in Johannesburg last June and in Baghdad in January, Arctic sea ice returning with a vengeance after a record retreat last summer, paralyzing blizzards in China, and a sharp drop in the globe’s average temperature.
It is no wonder that some scientists, opinion writers, political operatives and other people who challenge warnings about dangerous human-caused global warming have jumped on this as a teachable moment....www.nytimes.com/2008/03/02/science/02cold.html

Comparing climate change skeptics to Holocaust deniers is unbelievably offensive. Denying well-documented events of the past does not compare to skepticism over science's ability to predict the future.

March of the Polar BearsBy George F. Will, Washington Post, Thursday, May 22, 2008; Page A25 A preventive war worked out so well in Iraq that Washington last week launched another. The new preventive war -- the government responding forcefully against a postulated future threat -- has been declared on behalf of polar bears, the first species whose supposed jeopardy has been ascribed to global warming.
The Interior Department, bound by the Endangered Species Act, has declared polar bears a "threatened" species because they might be endangered "in the foreseeable future," meaning 45 years. (Note: 45 years ago, the now-long-forgotten global cooling menace of 35 years ago was not yet foreseen.) The bears will be threatened if the current episode of warming, if there really is one, is, unlike all the previous episodes, irreversible, and if it intensifies, and if it continues to melt sea ice vital to the bears, and if the bears, unlike in many previous warming episodes, cannot adapt....

I read that the G8 voted to cut emissions in half by 2050, but didn't get around to agreeing on just how they would do it. It's easy to agree with a goal in theary and not actually do anything to reach it.

And for those of you who want detailed discussions on the science of climate change, Climate Audit now has a message board: www.climateaudit.org/phpBB3/Climate Audit is run by Steve McIntyre, one of the scientists who debunked Michael Mann's "hockey stick" graph. The website/blog has a great deal of useful info and links. www.climateaudit.org/
